What are inferences in reading?

Inferences are explicit statements in the text.

Inferences are opinions that require no textual evidence.

Inferences are logical conclusions drawn from clues; support them with specific lines, events, or quotes.

Inferring in reading means drawing a logical conclusion from clues the author provides. It’s not just restating what’s directly said, but using descriptions, actions, dialogue, and setting to figure out something the text hints at without saying it outright. A good inference has backing from the text—you should be able to point to specific lines, events, or quotes that support it.

For example, if a character shivers, tightens their coat, and glances at dark clouds, you might infer that it’s cold or that a storm is coming, and you’d cite those moments as evidence. If someone avoids eye contact and their voice drops after a question, you might infer they’re nervous or guilty, again pulling from the observed details in the scene.

Inferring isn’t the same as stating the main idea or offering a personal opinion without textual support. It’s a reasoned conclusion about what the text implies, grounded in concrete clues.

Inferences are the same as the main idea.
